A Non-Golfer’s Guide to Buying Promotional Golf Balls

Strata Promotional Golf BallsPromotional golf balls are available from a number of well-known golfing brands.

Each manufacturer offers numerous different models, but aside from the logo, packaging and price, there’ll be many technical differences within the ball itself.

Most golfers are happy to use giveaway balls that they think will be in keeping with their standard of play. In fact, unless a golfer plays to a pretty high standard he/she will probably not be able to feel the difference between different qualities of ballTo help choose the right promotional golf balls for your golfing guests we’ve put together the following guide.

First, take into account the number of guests, their standard of golf and your budget. Promotional golf balls are usually supplied in boxes of 12 and priced in dozens. Within each outer box the balls are then in packs of three. It’s usual to give each golfer at least one pack of three balls as a minimum.

Low Cost (Around £10 Per Dozen) Golf Balls:

  • Are durable, won’t scuff, cut or mark easily and will last longer,
  • Have less spin,
  • Are generally for distance,
  • Have hard covers and therefore less ‘feel’.

Mid-Range (Around £20-£30 Per Dozen) Golf Balls:

  • Have similar distances to budget ones but with more control.

Top Of The Range (Over £25 Per Dozen) Golf Balls:

  • Have more spin,
  • Offer more control around the green,
  • Have softer covers that enable better golfers to use their skill to control the ball.

Callaway Golf BallsA golf ball’s construction is vitally important to the way it reacts to contact with a club.

Manufacturers are constantly pushing the limits of a golf ball design. Below are the most common constructions.

One-Piece:

The most basic and least expensive to produce. Designed for beginners, driving ranges and crazy-golf. Seldom used as a playing ball.

Two-Piece:

A solid core typically of a high-energy acrylate or resin covered by a tough, cut-proof cover that gives ultimate distance. These ‘hard’ balls are covered in either Surlyn, a specialty plastic, or a similar kind of material.

Three-Piece:

A solid rubber or liquid core, a layer of enhanced rubber and a moulded cover of durable Surlyn, Urethane or balata-like material.

Four-Piece:

Each layer or piece in a four-piece ball has a specific purpose. All the layers work together to offer long hitting but with the softest feel of any golf ball.
