The branded towel – manufactured by Christy, which is celebrating its 28th anniversary as official towel licensee – was first used by players on court at Wimbledon in 1987.

Players receive two towels, one hanging on the back of their chairs, another folded on their seats; more are available on request. It was reported that only 20% of the towels are returned for laundering as the players keep them or lob them into the crowd. This is overlooked of course as it provides subtle player-endorsed marketing and great exposure for the brand around the world.

The Wimbledon Towel can be bought at the Wimbledon gift shop. Their popularity has been increasing steadily. By 2012, more than 99,000 were being produced each year, and in 2014 over 25,000 were sold in the Wimbledon shop alone – all manufactured to the exact quality and standard as those used by the players.
